Two special education students made BERJAYA TVET College proud when they won first and second prizes in the 2018 National Abilympics Competition held at CIAST, Shah Alam last 18th October 2018.
Adam Abdul Rahman competed in the Data Processing category while Mak Sai Wah and Brenson Wong Zhen Yi competed in the Word processing category. Adam, who is currently studying DKM Web Development and Sai Wah, who is studying Skill Certificate of Proficiency won first and second prizes in their respective categories. Adam will be representing Malaysia in Kazan, Russia for the International Abilympics.
The International Abilympics Federation states “that ‘Abilympics’ was coined from the phrase ‘Olympics of Abilities’ and the 1st International Abilympics was held in Tokyo, Japan in 1981 to commemorate the United Nations’ International Year of Disabled Persons. It received the wide support of both governmental and non-governmental organizations. The Abilympics have helped to overturn traditional views in regard to the skills, potentials and abilities of disabled persons, resulting in increased employment opportunities and vocational stability.”
Kanendran T. Arulrajah, President of BERJAYA TVET COLLEGE proudly comment, “The students were mentored by IT Lecturers Nor Athira Azlan and Liyana Zupli who trained them four hours a day for one month to prepare for the competition.”
“This is the first time that BERJAYA TVET College has sent candidates for this competition. A total of thirty two (32) students from public and private institutions around Malaysia competed and I am proud that our students excelled in their respective categories. This experience will definitely provide them not only with exposure but will also broaden their minds and sharpen their skills while challenging their creativity,” Arulrajah added.
BERJAYA TVET College offer the Skills Certificate of Proficiency, a specially-designed programme offered to Special Needs Students and it comprises picking up skills in the areas of Housekeeping, Food and Beverage Service and Information Technology. The students will also be prepared for the City & Guilds Skills Proficiency Certificate in Housekeeping, Food and Beverage Services, and IT for Office Applications. On completion of this certificate, students have moved on to C & G, SKM and Berjaya TVET College courses in Culinary Arts, Pastry, Event Management, Global Business Services and Information Technology among other areas.
